Technical Details

Venture Tracker offers a powerful reporting capability within the system, but VT also offers Dashboards - a customisable feature which allows the automation of reporting and flexible presentation of whichever metrics are required.

Once built and configured, a dashboard will regenerate ‘on demand’ using live data from the VT database.

Dashboards can be interactive, printed, exported or even embedded into other websites in some cases. Some of these options will depend upon the overall configuration and enabled feature set of your VT instance and license.

Rationale

Business incubators track a variety of metrics to gauge their success and impact. These metrics can be broadly categorized into four areas (with examples):

Startup Performance

  • Survival rate: Percentage of incubated startups that remain operational after a pre-determined period (e.g., 3 years).
  • Funding and investment: Total amount of funding raised by startups during and after incubation, types of investors secured, and valuation increases.
  • Revenue and growth: Revenue generated by startups, rate of revenue growth, and market share gains.
  • Job creation: Number of jobs created by startups within the incubator and after graduation.
  • Number of exits: Achieved through acquisitions, mergers, or successful IPOs.

Incubator Effectiveness

  • Application and selection rate: Number of applicants, acceptance rate, and quality of selected startups.
  • Mentorship and resource utilization: Hours of mentorship provided, utilization of facilities and services, and participant satisfaction with these resources.
  • Networking and engagement: Events organized, partnerships formed, and level of engagement with investors, mentors, and the broader entrepreneurial community.
  • Graduation rate: Percentage of startups completing the incubation program successfully.
  • Impact on regional economy: Contribution to job creation, revenue generation, and overall economic development.

Financial Sustainability

  • Revenue streams: Income generated from program fees, rent, investments, and other sources.
  • Operating expenses: Cost of running the incubator, including staff salaries, facility expenses, and program costs.
  • Profitability: Whether the incubator is operating at a surplus or deficit.
  • Funding dependence: Reliance on external funding from grants, sponsorships, and donations

Impact and Social Mission

  • Diversity and inclusion: Percentage of female-led, minority-owned, or socially impactful startups supported.
  • Environmental impact: Sustainability initiatives supported and positive environmental outcomes achieved by startups.
  • Community development: Contribution to local entrepreneurship ecosystem and economic development.

The specific metrics that a business incubator tracks will depend on its unique mission, target audience, and funding model. However, focusing on a balanced mix of these categories can provide valuable insights into the incubator's performance, impact, and overall effectiveness.

A young incubator might prioritize startup survival and graduation rates, while a more established one might focus on funding secured and job creation.
